GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 26th April, 1918.

sir,

I have the honour to enclose herewith

e copy of a letter from His Britemic Majesty's Consul-Gener- al, Yunnanfu, forwarding a copy of a letter which he had addressed to the prominent British firms in Hongkong request- ing their co-operation in founding a scholarship fund for Yunnanese students at the Hongkong University and asking me to use my influence to induce the firms in question to support the scheme liberally.

On receipt of this letter I caused

a circular letter to be addressed to the firms in question, informing them that the proposal had the cordial approval of the Colonial Government, and also to the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce on the subject.

I have now received a reply from the

Chamber of Commerce, copy of which I enclose, from which you will observe that the Chamber are prepared to subscribe $1000 a year for 3 years provided that the Colonial Govern- ment are willing to provide an equal sum. I support this

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
